Wow, what a deal, right? Not so fast! These low cost packages are actually among the most expensive to own and operate. The "Free" alarm system or the specially priced $99.00 alarm system will carry a overpriced monthly service contract that is highly overpriced when compared to typical monthly monitoring rates others pay.
What's really going on here? Basically, you are being lured with an artificially low price or even FREE on the front end but on the back end you will end up paying 2 or 3 times more for your system than you should have spent! Fact is, these packages are almost never the best design choice. Frankly, they are usually entry level equipment grades sold by people that know only textbook based packages from the marketing compaines. Yes, there are some rather large companies involved in these packages but that does not make the system adequate or safe. They are rarely a good deal by any standard!
Get the real cost before you buy! When you look at the cost for an alarm system, look at the real cost! Consider you will be in your home for at least the next 5 years. Total up the "SPECIAL" price, the ADD-ON's that most offers require you to purchase, and then add in 5 years of monthly monitoring payments to know your true cost. You may easily find these bargain priced alarm systems are actually more expensive than any other offer and you'll be getting only entry level grade equipment (no matter what the salesman claims about the grade)
Check the Contract for TRICKY Rental clauses! Just when it seemed unfortunate to buy one of these budget systems, it actually gets worse! Most of these systems are written up by contract as RENTAL. Even if the sales person says you are buying it, if the contract says LEASE or RENTAL, you will not own that system when you stop paying the monthly contract.
So what are you really buying? In general, these free packages are sold by large national companies and the scheme isn't home security. The real plan is mass marketing and building vast numbers of Recurring Revenue clients (like you) paying excessively overpriced monthly rates while representing the system as Free or specially priced at $99.00 or 1 Dollar per day for protetion. Your alarm is usually sold to you by entry level sales representatives whose only experience comes from the sales training rooms of these companies. The systems are almost always monitored in bulk account monitoring centers located in other time zones than your own. And while the amount you pay ends up being a lot more than is normal, you likely are agreeing that the system is a rental only and belongs to the company, not you. It's not a good deal by any measure!
